                                                                     Thriller genre

What makes a thriller a thriller ?

The genre itself is based upon suspense and anticipation.

The aim of a thriller is to keep the audience engaged at every
moment of the film. This is done by using a number of clip
hangers in order to keep the audience on the edge of their
seats. Thriller films are also defined as keeping the protagonist
in the centre of the frame as he is within all the action in the film.
The genre tries make danger its main factor to make the audience
feel part of the film itself.

Generic conventions of the thriller genre :

  • Suspense
  • Plot twists
  • Action
  • Low Key Lighting
  • Quick Cuts
  • Shadows
  • Suspense building music
  • Changes in shot angles
  • Internal human sound effects like breathing or heartbeat sounds
  • Dark colour scheme
  • Dark twisted Antagonists

Thriller films usually contain a lot of action in order to keep the audience engaged with what is going on in the film. The use of sound in thrillers also does this. One of the more famous examples of this is the in the film "Jaws" (Spielberg, 1975) and its iconic theme tune which build suspense and keeps the audience on the edge of their seat.
